The Top 5 Activities You Can Do In North Georgia

North Georgia is an area rich in natural beauty. The Appalachian Mountains dominate the skyline, while beautiful waterfalls and scenic river valleys make this a perfect destination for people who enjoy adventure holidays suitable for all the family.

Why don’t you take your family to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains and breathe that pure mountain air?  There are lots of great activities you and your family can enjoy in North Georgia, and here are 5 of the best.

#1. Ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The ever-popular Blue Ridge Scenic Railway (BRSR) is a fantastic way to explore this beautiful mountainous region. Aboard either modern climate-controlled or vintage open-air rail cars, you can enjoy scenic views of the Toccoa River and admire the best foliage in the state.

The train departs from Blue Ridge and stops at McCaysville in Georgia and Copperhill in Tennessee. Stop off to browse around craft stores and antique shops or wander alongside the Ocoee River with an ice cream in hand. It’s a great adventure for adults and children alike.

The BRSR is a heritage railway that aims to preserve this scenic mountain track for future generations. It serves to remind us how railways used to be the only way to travel through this rocky terrain not so many years ago. Why not take your kids along and show them how folks used to get around before airplanes became so common?

2. Hike along mountain trails

f you and your family enjoy hiking, you’ll love North Georgia. Here you can hike along the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Springer Mountain in North Georgia to Maine.

There are lots of stunning views along the trail, such as the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, which is less than ½ mile from the Springer Mountain trailhead along the Benton MacKaye Trail.

Another great hiking destination is the Anna Ruby Falls Scenic Area. These stunning twin waterfalls are reached by a short ½ mile paved trail, which makes them a great place to take younger kids.

The Tanasi Trail System and the Cohutta Wilderness are not only great places to hike, but they’re also suitable for mountain biking. In fact, the annual Cohutta 100 mountain bike endurance challenge is held in the Cohutta Wilderness. Why not rent a mountain bike and see how much you can endure?

3. Ride a horse

The mountainous scenery of North Georgia looks great from the back of a horse. Horseback riding is undeniably less strenuous than hiking or mountain biking, and you can play at being a cowboy while admiring the Cohutta Mountains.

There’s nothing on Earth to compare with the feeling of communing with nature atop a living, breathing “vehicle”. And everything looks so different from atop your horse.

In Blue Ridge, you can find organized horse riding for people of all ages and experience levels, from novice to expert. If you’ve never been horse riding, this is a great location to give it a try.

4. Journey down the Toccoa River

If you enjoy kayaking or river tubing, the Toccoa River is a great place to splash around and have some fun. If you’ve never tried these fun activities before, this is your chance to give them a go.

Children and adults alike will love bobbing down the river atop a giant tube. While you tube the Toccoa, you’ll float under bridges and bump down gentle rapids. Just slouch back, relax, and admire the beautiful scenery along the riverbanks.

Kayaking down the Toccoa rapids is exhilarating. And there are lots of other great places to kayak in North Georgia, including Lake Blue Ridge. Kayaking can be great fun for adults and children alike.

5. Zipline through the forest canopy

For an adrenaline rush, try ziplining. You can hurtle through the forest canopy suspended from a cable while enjoying the breath-taking scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Cherokee Forest.

The view of the forest from a zipline is unique. You’re eye to eye with the squirrels up there! And you can pretend to be Superman/Supergirl for just one day.

Even though you hurtle through the air at 30 mph, you’re perfectly safe on the well-maintained zipline routes found around the Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia.
